So who is “intelligent”, voting for KPFK, and who airs it audibly ? who ?”

Just who is acting intelligently enough to be running Our Radio Station -- into the ground

Or why are those infernal "funding begging sessions" frequent, lengthy, and repetitive, and alienating those who are already donors repeated...continually ?

What else is needed at KPFK that is not presently there now ?

[we thank the cartoonist too]  intelligence is not just wearing a sticker that they "voted" or "paid as KPFK sponsor" either. Intelligence is not having the same "poor us", "pay us", "give more" on-air begging if there were better ...what ?  KPFK management?  policies?  audits and accounting ? programming ? unbiased viewpoints? or what ?   what ?

Sometimes some of us, ordinary folk, KPFK listener-sponsors, wonder..... could it be that this cartoon  describes what is happening to the programmers, the ever-shifting inexperienced managers, and the loyal  volunteers too that preside at Our Radio Station =   & paid for by the many donors who HOPE and WANT improved station operations and Honest  + Unbiased + Intelligent-prone + Educational + multi-Diverse [which means not diverting to one racial / social / class-level / viewpointed group.

Instead of just choosing to emphasize the ones who shout loudest or claim 'worst victimhood' - those saying we have been More Victimized, Worse Treated, Suffered Most, and / or at least are "holier than anyone of you"..... it would be more Diverse to Include more global and local viewpoints than those that sound-off and tell-off listeners that are given on-air access now.

Wearing a sticker to identify as The Most Victimized, and thus The Most Deserving of Anything We Want results in alienating and shooing away all others who also may have had it 'hard' or 'bad' or difficult but not played it up so loudly.

Statistics are strange and makes us wonder how come this discrepancies to what things 'appear' to be:

1.   from   the Census at:
re LA County demographics race [or call it "culture" as some prefer]  from  July 1, 2014:

White alone,                                              71.3%

Black or African American alone                 9.2%

American Indian and Alaska Native alone     1.5%

Asian alone                                                14.8%

Native Hawaiian  & Pacific Islander alone   00.4%

Hispanic or Latino alone                            48.4%

White alone, not Hispanic or Latino           26.8%

Foreign born persons,  2010-2014              34.9%

Interesting to note what proportion of which group dominates the media, the protests, the KPFK programmers, the content of KPFK programs, and other comparative things we all see, hear and about which we care enough to attend. Diligently.

The Mission at KPFK and Pacifica have similar ideals... goals....desires:   excerpts indicated below- with special words put into italics  here for emphasis:
as "corrected amendment filed May 5, 1971."

".....To establish and operate for educational purposes, in such manner that the facilities involved shall be as nearly self-sustaining as possible....

".... to encourage and provide outlets for the creative skills and energies of the community; to conduct classes and promote and aid other creative activities which will serve the cultural welfare of the community.....

"...that shall contribute to a lasting understanding between nations and between the individuals of all nations, races, creeds and colors; to gather and disseminate information on the causes of conflict between any and all of such groups....

" promote the study of political and economic problems and of the causes of religious, philosophical and racial antagonism....

"... to obtain access to sources of news not commonly brought together in the same medium; and to employ such varied sources in the public presentation of accurate, objective, comprehensive news on all matters vitally affecting the community."
The words are short, simple, clear with intentions to "understand" and "educate" and get "access to sources of news not commonly brought together "   -- and to "promote study" [not create antagonisms]   with a focus on "community" and not limiting that group to any 1 or 2 or 3 selected types.

Not a Constitution with Rules of Law but rather the words of wishing to provide a space for improving what conflicts and antagonisms were recognized then and when the Pacifica Mission was perhaps somewhat different in 1959.

See more here:     on the KPFK official site

There is more info on Wikipedia, but much more his-story is findable about what else occurred way back then, as in a book by Matthew Lasar as he did some more research. Before. Published book 11 years ago.

And there are other online sites, like :
[written by 2009-2016, by A B Cryer, and taken from Wikipedia info].

But Wikipedia is not updated and can be used for programmer promoting themselves by their own editing of this site, so the shifts of emphasis are not to be totally trusted, unfortunately.  See :

While  others have tried to document the turmoils, similar to now, financial shenanigans by Pacifica National Board trying to steal and buy out the foundation to benefit themselves, which was fought by one of our own KPFK dedicated members:   David Adelman who won a difficult law suit to prevent the theft.

Matthew Lasar wrote a whole book, available on years ago describing more details.

The reason to wonder about where have WE arrived at KPFK now is to notice how much similar competitive [not "educational"] and infighting for power and control [not creating "community"] and slanted biased programming with very selective points of view predominating the air waves that were meant for "all".

Amazon is priced high but a local library may also have this book from 2005:
""Uneasy Listening: Pacifica Radio's Civil War"   =

The point here now ?   Why are such differences from the Mission, even of 1971 [long or not so long ago for others] than what is being produced now and where is the management to insure that the original reasons for even having KPFK is neglected and not continued ?

Wearing a sticker or a badge or having a title of "General Manager" or "program director-interim" or KPFK Local Station Board Member does not mean using the needed 'good business practices' that it takes for this radio station to be "self-sustaining" or even pretend it is.

For the continuation of many and more and longer 'fund drives' to claim that the victimized & poor & unprejudiced & "free speech" & whatever-else-is-proclaimed-but-not-honestly-done at KPFK....for there to always be lack of enough funds to maintain the station and to thus alienate those who have ALREADY PAID ENOUGH AND FREQUENTLY BEFORE.

And those who now have to turn away and tune out -for what they paid good and hard-earned $$$$ for before the haranguing and  guilt-tripping and begging... ugh !

enough complaining. Apparently nothing can be fixed nor is there the awareness, consciousness nor 'emotional intelligence' [that's different than what is commonly measured "IQ" for words and numbers] . Why bother writing or blogging about what remains the same-old, same-old "poor-me-poor-us-give-us-your-monies" taking up about 1/4 of all airtime/ per year...or maybe even more.

whatever... accepting KPFK as it is now is to give-up and go-away.

  1. That station is racist as heck and just continually beats the victim mentality drum.
